Great brands often have a great story to share. Levi's® is no exception...
Its beginnings made fashion history the world over. It all began in 1853, when Oscar Levi Strauss, a Bavarian émigré, moved to San Francisco to open a branch of his brother's textile business. He brought a lot of canvas with him, and decided to put it to good use by making heavy-duty work pants that would keep the gold miners happy. That was the beginning of the Levi's® story.
In the 1870s, the company chose a different material: a blue-dyed cotton canvas made in Nîmes. Levi's® then used it to create a new line of pants.
In 1873, the company patented the rivets used to reinforce the pockets. This period was also significant for the appearance of two distinctive features: the orange thread matching the rivets and, since 1886, the two-horse label sewn onto the waistband.
